Outreach at the Albany Bulb
The disparate array of people and organizations with interest in the Bulb includes a large off-leash dog community – sometimes vying against bird preservationists, bird preservationists, transients who have called the landfill home for two decades, renegade artists who build sculptures from found objects, and local authorities. Our performances enabled a diverse audience to join in celebration through the shared experience of the interactive performance journey and enter into dialogue with one another.
We Players’ presence in the space, during rehearsals and performances, facilitated communication between these diverse groups. We worked closely with several communities and engaged conversations throughout the rehearsal process. At post show gatherings, after sharing food together, we invited representatives from these various communities – who had disparate visions for the future uses of the space, to briefly share their perspective, and then We Players facilitated discussion.
We Players crew frequented the Albany Bulb at a very interesting time in the peninsula’s history. There was heated discussion between area government agencies concerning ownership of and liability for the land(fill). WE are thankful to have shared the conversation with so many active community members, who listen deeply, who continued the conversation long after We Players left, and who continue to frequent the Bulb to this day.
