i crossed the Pacific ocean, from Mexico to Hawaii, on a small sailboat with one other person in 2009. there was nothing but sea and sky for weeks. and a deep quiet peace settled into my heart and soul. the journey gave me the strength and steady center to strive for new creative heights. and taught me there are many more oceans to travel, and I must…there is salt in my skin, open sky in my heart, sea spray in my mind… i dare not stay away from ocean’s arms for too long…

I have been locked up half of my teenage years. -Luis

The system think that they can change us by locking us up.

You can buy back stolen items, but you can’t buy back lost time.

I’m so young and I’m really missing out on a lot. – Jasmine

I’m the first person in my whole family to ever be arrested. It’s really taking a toll on my spirit, but at the same time it’s strengthening me and teaching me a very valuable lesson. This is not the life for me and it’s taken juvy to make me realize that. -Ashton

Birthdays, holidays not with your family… -Taylor

I can’t see my little brother and i miss him. -Elizabeth

By not being able to see my family when I want, by eating when they tell me to, by being locked in my room. -Angelina

Being locked up made me a non-sympathetic person and fearful or most things. -Donte

My brother was like my best friend before he started going to prison. He taught me right from wrong. When he left I was 10 and he was facing a 5 year sentence I didn’t understand. When he came home I was SCARED. I didn’t know what to say; I was scared of him. I hate to say, it was like I didn’t know him. -Tia

The prison system is like putting a carpet over the dust so you don’t have to clean it… they’re not doing anything to help people… [not] actually taking the time to see what’s making the child act up. -Carey

All people say is half of us are going to prison and the other half is going to die and it’s only going to be one out of a million that make it all the way through life. -Joshua

I’m my own hero because I believe in myself when no one else do. And I can change a lot of stuff. -Johnny
